Cigna Compass

Role: Visual Design Lead

Cigna’s product innovation team needed a partner to help them research, design, and build a web app that would surface clear, actionable steps to consumers at the right time — how to save money, stay healthy, and get the most out of their plan. Rather than a place to manage your account or file a claim, the focus was on a system for delivering what to do next. This experience would serve as a pilot project launched with one of Cigna’s biggest clients.

My team and I developed a visual language that supported the intent of the app, where maximization of one’s healthcare was achieved by minimizing the design.

Visual Exploration

The research phase revealed three key themes upon which this experience should be based: maximization, guidance, and personalization. These themes resonated with the Cigna team and served as an ideal framework for exploring initial visual directions. Mood boards, style tiles, and key screen designs helped us communicate our thinking and get alignment on a final direction.

Concept Refinement

The selected direction was refined and applied to screens across the app experience. A simple card model formed the backbone of the app and presented users with a single place to check in and interact. Large type, clear hierarchy, and a thoughtful use of color grounded the experience in simplicity, getting out of the way so that the content remained loud and clear.

Outcomes

The Compass pilot project was a measurable success with Cigna’s largest enterprise client. Users of Compass were more likely to stay in-network, take suggested screenings, and earn incentives.
